Mexican Museum Draws Eyes in the U.S.

Since opening its doors nearly two years ago, the National Museum of Death in Mexico has turned curious heads, both foreign and domestic.

USA Today, America’s most widely read newspaper, has highlighted the unusualy museum in a recent piece. However, the article thankfully reserves judgement and shows respect for the traditions of honoring the dead, the very purpose for which the Museum was created.

Two day drug sweep yields major results

0_61_012008_drug_cartelA full on sweep for nearly two days has resulted in the arrests of more than 300 people on suspect of drug related charges.

In a joint effort between Mexican and U.S. authorities, Federal Agents rushed into action yesterday, dealing a serious blow to organized crime in the United States and in Mexico.

The sweep and indictments culminated a 44-month operation during which the Justice Department arrested about 1,200 people and seized nearly 12 tons of drugs as well as $32.8 million in U.S. currency.

Britney Spears Chooses Mexico as Vacation Destination

According to celebrity blog site TMZ.com, “Britney Spears played at the beach in a black bikini with her boyfriend Jason Trawick. She and her boys jetted off to Mexico this weekend and hit up a Zihuatanejo resort.”

 

Britney and Mr. Trawick, who is also her manager took her two sons Jayden James and Sean Preston to enjoy the scenic Pacific overlooks.

Investments Continue to Pour into Mexico, According to the Wall Street Journal

Mexico continues to ride high as stock prices rise for a tenth consecutive day. Today, the market closed at its highest point all year, as confidence in the market continues to rise.

 

The IPC market index experienced a 0.4% jump today, bringing the total increase for the year-to-date up to 38.6%.

 

With foreign investments continuing to pour into Mexico, experts are saying that the upward trend will continue well into the foreseeable future.

President Calderon Takes a Stand Against Waste

In a controversial move, President Felipe Calderon has taken a stand against inefficiency by electing to disband the state-run electricity distribution company Luz y Fuerce del Centro (LyFC).

 

Citing huge losses and staggering inefficiencies, the President has chosen to revamp the entire system in order to provide more efficient and affordable energy to the public.

 

While the move is sure to attract protests from employees, Mexican officials site that the overhaul is surely the best thing for the Mexican people and the global community as a whole.

Mexico Heads Back to the World Cup

Cuauhtémoc Blanco provided a blank slate for the Mexican National soccer team, coming up huge in today’s World Cup Qualifier against El Salvador.

 

Blanco returned to Mexico with a nagging injury suffered during MLS play with the Chicago Fire. However, the star overcame the pain to play 77-minutes of the match, scoring one goal as Mexico bested El Salvador, 4-1, earning them a spot in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

 

At that, Blanco is full aware that he has a long way to go before he can secure any real World Cup glory.

 

Andrea Martinez of www.goal.com comments on Blanco’s future on the national team.

 

Although Blanco helped qualify for South Africa, and added a goal in the against El Salvador that qualified Mexico, he’s knows that he has to work at club level to make it onto the final list.  

 

“It’s the manager’s decision. One just has to prepare and be at 100 percent with your team to be called up for the Mexican national team and play in the World Cup,” added Blanco. “The truth is that we can make history, but we have to work. We have time to do it and hopefully we can have a good World Cup.”

Mexico Brings America’s Most Wanted to Justice

One of America’s most dangerous fugitives is now being brought to justice thanks to Mexican law enforcement officials.

 

Jorge Alberto Lopez Orozco had been on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list since March 2005. Lopez Orozco had fled to Mexico in 2002 after the brutal murder of his girlfriend and her two young sons in Idaho.

 

But with the crackdowns on crime throughout the Mexican countryside, the nation would provide no refuge for the alleged criminal, as law enforcement officials detained Lopez Orozco in Guerrero. He has since been transferred and is awaiting extradition to the United States, just the latest example in a slew of major law enforcement victories in the joint efforts between Mexico and the U.S.

Mexico Continues to Recieve Praise from the New York Times

A recent New York Times article lauds the Mexican government for their praiseworthy handling of the H1N1 crisis, as we look towards another flu season. The article, titled “Experience Guides Mexico as Swine Flu Cases Surge,” highlights Mexico’s ability to handle the growing crisis.

 

While there is plenty of work left to be done, Marc Lacey and Antonio Betancourt of the New York Times feels that Mexico’s recent brushes with the flu crisis will separate them as a leader in the global health community, and provide an example for other nations to follow this flu season.

Small Bodegas Mean Big Business in Mexico

An American held company is seeing big profits in Mexico, as Wal-Mart’s Bodegas have seen huge profit increases in the third quarter.

 

Wal-Mart de Mexico, SAB, whose offices are headquartered in Mexico City, began to offer “smaller, cheaper products to Mexicans at its Bodega Express shops.”

 

The business model has been a huge success throughout Mexico, earning a reported 3.66 billion peso ($269 million) net income in just the third quarter alone.

 

Wal-Mex is just one of hundreds of companies using ingenuity to thrive in a global depression, as international business continues to pour into Mexico to continually impressive results.
